Navigating a Career in a Difficult Political Climate

The last week has been a whirlwind, with many folks in the DMV left feeling gobsmacked

and numb after a landslide election solidifying Trump's second term in the Whitehouse. I've heard from many folks over the last few days who are trying to process the information, and what it means for their lives and livelihoods. It's been a time of mourning. The DMV's economy is in one way or another affected by what happens in the federal government, so it's only natural for people to worry - especially when full agencies and funding are at risk.

After this period of mourning and grief, it's time to get back up, go outside for that "stupid mental health walk", and then come back and do some reflection to build your plan of action. A difficult political climate is navigable, and your career doesn't need to be impacted. Here are some easy steps to get back to feeling like you are making a positive impact on the world, while still having some control over your career.

• Reflect on your values and order by priority.

• Reflect on your career path for the next 5 years to see if it still makes sense and aligns with the values you've highlighted above. What changes, if any, do you need to make?

• Review your finances and make sure you have an emergency fund with 3-6 months of cash in a high yield savings account (it takes about 5-6 months to find a new job). If you don't have an emergency fund - make a plan to fund one and prioritize this.

• Find ways outside of work to make an impact - financially through donations if you have the money, or through time by volunteering with an organization whose cause you support.
